Blue Mountains | Weekend Getaway

BLUE MOUNTAINS | WEEKEND GETAWAY

While in Canada this past year my boyfriend and I decided to go to The Blue Mountains for our anniversary. We went in the Spring but really any time of year is lovely in Northern Ontario. We were living in Toronto at the time so the drive wasn't bad at all. I think we even went up to our Air bob on Friday after work, stayed over the weekend, and made the journey home on Monday. If you know anything about Canadian road trips, a stop at Tim Hortons is a MUST, with a couple of "double doubles" and a box of Timbits in the car we were good to go.

The Airbnb we rented we had all to ourselves, it was lovely to be right on Lake Huron. If you drive up from Toronto head up the 400 towards Collingwood and it will take you about two hours. I love the luxury of an Airbnb because it allows you to have privacy with your own key, your own kitchen and even wifi. We felt right at home. Because it was late when we arrived we had a quick walk around the Blue Mountains Village but soon left home back to the Airbnb because we were exhausted from work and driving.

Saturday morning we woke up bright and early, seriously we were up at like six am. It's crazy how your body waits until you're physically ON holiday to be in get up and let's go mode! We took advantage of our new found energy, had a small breakfast and hit the road up to Tobermory. If you've never been to Tobermory, Ontario, you NEED to go. It has a small town charm, tons of boat tours, hiking trails, and not to mention it's absolutely stunning. We got there about mid morning with it being another two hour drive from the Blue Mountains and well worth it. We went to the local shop and got some snacks, we then found a lighthouse and some rocks to spend a few hours exploring and sun bathing. We had a look around town and headed straight to the sweet shop of course to get ice cream along with some real Canadian homemade fudge. 10/10 would recommend. We decided to explore the Grotto some more are drove to Bruce Peninsula National Park. Great for camping, hiking, swimming in the summer and overall relaxation with a countless number of instagram adventure shots. After a bit of hiking and a long drive home we headed straight back to our Airbnb and grabbed a pizza on the way.

Sunday morning we had a bit of a lay in, getting up mid morning and headed straight into town. We spent a few hours strolling through the Blue Mountain Village enjoying the serenity of the cute shops and live music. We scoped out a place to go for dinner later that evening.

We then headed to the Scandinave Spa for the afternoon. The Scandinave spa is a chain of three spa locations around Canada, they are absolutely breathtaking and each unique to their own location. The location in Ontario sits on twenty five beautiful acres surrounded by Ontario Birch, Canadian Maple, and pine trees. Scandinavian baths and hydrotherapy have many benefits including cleansing the body, stimulating blood circulation and releasing endorphins. If you visit in the Fall be sure to take in the beautiful colours and even spot a bit of wildlife. Turtles, tree frogs and wild turkeys can all be seen on the property. If you visit in the winter you can watch skiers go down the slopes and be surrounded by a blanket of snow. Theres nothing like the smell, sounds and sights of nature to help you escape your everyday routine. We soaked up every minute in this slice of paradise, literally.

After feeling super relaxed and recharged we got ready and went to dinner in town at Copper Blues. A good chilled atmosphere and the menu truly does have something for everyone. If you want to go out for a nice meal in town I would also recommend Oliver and Bonacini Cafe or The Pottery Restaurant; both are rated four out of five stars. For something a little more fast paced head to Firehouse Pizza, The Leeky Canoe Pub & Eatery or The Dam Pub Gastropub. I'll link the top 10 restaurants in the village down below.

Of course no trip to the Blue Mountains would be complete without a Beaver Tail, I mean the Canadian dessert of course! A fresh, warm crepe with the toppings of your choice. We got one for the drive home the next morning making our trip complete and giving Chris a true Canadian experience.I went for the nutella with banana and he went for the s'more.  If this doesn't satisfy your sweet tooth I don't know what will!

Overall we had a lush weekend getaway and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Have you explored the Ontario Blue Mountains yourself? I would love to hear about your trip, where you stayed and of course where you ate! Drop a comment below or send me an e-mail.

Happy travelling,

Julie xx
